London Business School MBA Essay Analysis

(Application cycle 2022-23)

LBS MBA Essay 1:

What are your post-MBA goals and how will your prior experience and the London Business School programme contribute towards these? (500 words)

A good strategy is to begin by explicitly stating your short and long-term goals. Be specific. Name the job you're aiming for immediately after the MBA. Explain what you've done so far towards these goals.

Next, explain your motivation for wanting to reach these goals. Ideally, tell a story that shows the reader your passion for your chosen area.

Targeting healthcare? Tell the story of finding a hospital for your dad.

Targeting organisational consulting? Write about that time you restructured your department. You get the idea.

Finally, explain the gaps in your profile that you'll need to fill during the MBA program, and describe which aspects of the LBS program will help you fill these gaps. Perhaps by building your network in London (something LBS is known for). Perhaps it's gaining a better grasp of corporate finance allowing you to pivot into a finance role within your industry.

Describe which core classes, electives, treks, student groups, clubs etc will give you what you need. Particularly if you're targeting a niche industry, demonstrate you've researched the recruiting processes. As always, go beyond the school website. Speak to students, alumni and recruitment staff. Touch on living in London, but don't overplay this - there are many ways to move to London other than attending business school.

LBS MBA Essay 2 (Optional):

Is there any other information you believe the Admissions Committee should know about you and your application to London Business School? (500 words)

The keyword here is "SHOULD". Don't feel you must answer the question because it's there, and certainly don't feel the need to write 500 words. Elaborate on any important aspects of your applications that you feel might affect your application. Some examples: explain any academic weakness (such as low GPA), gaps between jobs, or your choice of recommenders (such as why you aren't using your current manager)

Keep a direct writing style here. This is not the place for soul-searching or a long-winded story.
