How Many Letters of Recommendation Does the MIT Sloan Fellows MBA Require?
The MIT Sloan Fellows MBA requires 1 letter of recommendation, preferably from a current or most recent supervisor/manager. You will also need to provide contact details for two additional professional references, who may be contacted by the Admissions Committee if further information is needed.
Your primary recommender should ideally be someone who has directly supervised your work and can speak in detail about your performance, leadership potential, and readiness for the collaborative, high-impact environment of the Sloan Fellows program. Recommendations from family members are not accepted.

MIT Sloan Fellows MBA Recommendation Letter Questions
Recommenders are asked to upload a letter (ideally no longer than two pages) addressing the following:
How long and in what capacity have you known the applicant?
How does the applicant stand out from others in a similar capacity?
Please give an example of the applicant’s impact on a person, group, or organization.
Please give a representative example of how the applicant interacts with other people.
Please tell us anything else you think we should know about this applicant.
Describe the most important piece of constructive feedback you have given the applicant. Please detail the circumstances and the applicant’s response.
Analysis
Applicant Ratings
The rating section provides the Admissions Committee with a clear view of your strengths across key competencies valued in the Sloan Fellows MBA classroom. Encourage your recommender to be thoughtful and balanced rather than rating every category as “Truly Exceptional,” as this may raise questions about how well they know you.
A strategic approach is to assign:
“Truly Exceptional” to 6–7 criteria where you genuinely shine
“Outstanding” to 1–2 criteria
“Above Average” to 1 criterion (if there is a clear area for growth)
The Recommendation Letter
Guide your recommender to write a concise, 1-2 page letter that directly addresses all six prompts.
1. How long and in what capacity have you known the applicant? Ask your recommender to clearly state the length and nature of your professional relationship and briefly describe your role and key responsibilities.
2. How does the applicant stand out from others in a similar capacity? Encourage the recommender to highlight what makes you different from your peers in comparable roles. Support this with 1–2 specific examples that showcase your unique strengths in areas such as analytical thinking, innovation, or leadership.
3. Please give an example of the applicant’s impact on a person, group, or organization.
Request a concrete story (ideally using the SCAR format: Situation - Challenge - Action - Result) that demonstrates your tangible impact. This example should highlight your analytical, innovative, or problem-solving abilities and show the measurable results of your contributions.
4. Please give a representative example of how the applicant interacts with other people.
This prompt is especially important for the Sloan Fellows program, which values collaboration. Ask for an example that illustrates your interpersonal skills, such as mentoring teammates, fostering inclusive teamwork, resolving conflicts constructively, or supporting others’ development. Emphasize how you help create a positive and collaborative environment.
5. Please tell us anything else you think we should know about this applicant. Suggest that the recommender add any additional relevant insights, such as your potential to succeed in the intensive Sloan Fellows MBA environment, your long-term leadership goals, or any current projects/initiatives that demonstrate your readiness for advanced management education.
6. Describe the most important piece of constructive feedback you have given the applicant. Please detail the circumstances and the applicant’s response.
Ask the recommender to share a genuine example of constructive feedback they provided, including the context, the specific feedback, and how you responded to it. Highlight your self-awareness, willingness to learn, and the positive changes or growth that resulted from this feedback.
